Department of Surgery

The prestigious Raja Muthiah Medical College and Hospital, Annamalai University was started in 1985. The Division of General Surgery is functioning since then. The initial staff strength was 6. The initial intake of 60 MBBS seats was later upgraded to 150 seats. The Post Graduate program MS General Surgery was started in 1997 with 2 PG seats which later increased to 18 seats. As this institution caters to the rural population of three districts in and around Chidambaram, the Department of Surgery plays a pivotal role in fulfilling the surgical needs of this population.

The latest Laparoscopy Surgery was started in the year of 2002 . Endoscopy and Colonoscopy investigations were started in the year of 1997. Along with allied specialties like Anesthesiology the department is running 14 Operation Theaters including Day Care OT and Septic OT. In addition Minor OT attached to OPD and trauma OT attached to causality is also functioning. Five specialty clinics like Thyroid, Breast, Diabetic Foot, Hepatobiliary and Colorectal clinics are regularly run by General Surgery Department. In addition Super Speciality Department of Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery are functional. Also Surgeries are undertaken through CMCHIS & PMJJBY Scheme for poor patients.
